There are definitely used cars out there which are intriguing and priced justifiably for young people looking to buy their first car.
Chevrolet Cruze
Chevrolet’s recently introduced compact car, the Chevrolet Cruze, can be a good choice to someone looking for a handsome looking small used car. There are two generations available, with 2016-2017 models starting at around $15,000. The 2014 facelifted model offers a sharper, smarter face, and also a new diesel engine. A 2014-2015 used Chevy Cruze LT with the Technology pack would be what you want though. It’s available at a good price point with Chevrolet’s 1.4-litre turbocharged Ecotec which offers respectable performance with good economic figures. The Cruze has been particularly praised for its poised handling too, with an interesting interior design too.
Ford Focus
Moving on, there is of course the obvious choice from Ford. The Ford Focus, it’s been a household name for a long time, and there’s a good reason for it. There are three generations of the Focus, but used third generation Ford Focus models have come down in price. There are a lot of combination that buyers could opt for their Focus, and thus it may pay dividend to take your time looking for an ideal one. While pricey, used Focus STs is the choice for those who want a very fast car. It’s a car that can do everything, both practical and exciting. However, a pre-owned 2014 Focus SE will prove to be a more pragmatic choice, with prices floating around the 10-13 grand mark depending on mileage. It’s well equipped, stylish, and the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine is plenty strong for everyone. Most importantly though, you’re still sharing the same excellent chassis with assertive dynamics as the Focus ST. There’s also the exceptional fit and finish from Ford.
Hyundai Elantra
Recently, if you’re looking for a car built for the young, people will point you to the east, and for good reason too. One of that is the pre-owned Hyundai Elantra. It may not be the overt choice, but make no mistake, it’s as competitive as the other options here. The latest model may look attractive, but worn previous generation models are available at very reasonable prices. 2014 and 2015 Elantra SEs are available for around $15,000, but you can even find the Limited for a bit more cash. There are also hatchback models available for those looking for more eccentric variants. What is offered here are good looks, plenty of tech, a big trunk/hatch, and a quiet and comfortable cabin for long journeys. The 2.0-litre engine available is good, but you may find the ride quality to be a bit sportier than others.
Kia Soul
Not only that, but the Kia Soul is another perfect example. It’s definitely a car marketed towards the young crowd or those who want to be unique. Newer, slightly used Kia Soul models are still asking for around $18,000, but the older models with more kilometres put into them are on sale for around $13,000. What you’re getting for your money though, is an esoteric stylistic urban crossover. Kia has put in a lot of features into the soul, and of course, you will have no issues with space inside one of these. Not only that, the Soul is very well regarded for its crash safety scores. You’ll want the 2.0-litre engine at least though, because when you start picking up passengers, the extra grunt will definitely be appreciated.
Nissan Versa
Coming back down to Earth, time for another sober choice from Japan. It’s difficult to go wrong with any of the compact models coming out of Japan, and it’s the most affordable choice here. A slightly used Nissan Versa Note, the 2016 hatchback variant, can be found at around $14,000. You do have to keep your expectations low, but the Nissan Versa is praised for its good looks, sensible interior space, and comfort. Of course, with a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine putting out modest figures, it’s no trailblazer. But it’s smooth, and the handling is inert, which can be treated as good and bad. Of course, being a new car, perhaps the most important thing to note is that it comes with a warranty.
