Want something smooth riding, handles capably and has a well-built cabin with a simple design? Then perhaps you may want to have a look at a used Nissan Rogue. The Rogue is a small crossover that’s often praised for offering a poised handling, comparable to that of a small sedan. While it loses out on cargo space, it makes up for it in interior quality. Take note though, as the only powertrain option you get is a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-4 with a CVT.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Moving on, if you’re looking for an alternative to the import market offerings, a used Hyundai Santa Fe. With Hyundai’s rapid rise in automotive know-how recently, even their used cars are beginning to look appealing, and the second generation Santa Fe is one example. Depending on the powertrain and trim, prices can vary wildly. If power is a concern, the 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated V6 is your choice. It’s smooth, refined, efficient and effortless, in fact, the Santa Fe is still a strong contender in performance today. It offers a lot of kit for its price, and being a mid-sized crossover, it has a lot of space, both for passengers and cargo. AWD is also available.

Ford Escape

If domestic is more your taste, then you may want to look at options from the big three. One of them being a pre-owned Ford Escape. Another entry into the small crossover segment, early years of the latest generation is often up for a great price. It’s a jack-of-all-trades, providing solid performance, confident handling, good interior and fancy technology. The interior has a futuristic look to it.

Dodge Journey

Otherwise, the second generation Chevrolet Equinox, another small crossover, is also a good option. Early 2011 models can be had for around $13,000, again, depending on trim and powertrain. A used Chevrolet Equinox offers a more understated and rounded look. It offers a premium looking interior, and it’s on the comfortable side for SUVs. Boasting a quiet cabin, comfortable seats, soft ride and a refined engine. The 2.4-litre I4 provides good performance overall.

Finally, a relatively new mid-sized crossover offering, a pre-owned Dodge Journey. Being newer, it is very good-looking, simple interior with tons of space available. You can even get up to three rows of seats inside the Journey. The infotainment system is pretty intuitive too. If you want a used Dodge Journey, you the four-cylinder 2.4-litre and the more powerful 3.6-litre V6, as it offers strong performance for similar efficiency to the inline-4.
